State of the Union, Retirements, and Trump’s Real Numbers

Just in time to avoid having his assets seized, Donald Trump posted the $91.6 million bond required to appeal E. Jean Carroll’s case. A subsidiary of the Chubb Group guaranteed it. Why would they do that? Everything with Trump is transactional.

In 2018, Donald Trump appointed Evan Greenberg to the Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations. Greenberg is Chubb Group’s CEO. He will not get that cash back because when Trump’s appeal fails, the payment goes to Carroll.

HAPPY INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY!

Did you catch the State of the Union Address last night? (A link to the full speech is at the end of this post.) Biden was at his best, calling out Republicans on every nefarious plan: cut Medicare and Social Security and use that money to fund another $2 billion in tax cuts for the rich. No planned Republican policy was left unmentioned. He called out the decision to take away women’s freedom of choice.

Time for some more good news.

Neither Senator, Joe Manchin nor Kyrsten Sinema will seek reelection. I know they’re democrats, but they are not. They vote with republicans. In December 2022, Sinema switched her party to independent. Joe Manchin has used his votes to preserve his investments in fossil fuel and to protect big pharma because his daughter is CEO for Mylan. She hiked prices of the lifesaving EpiPen over 500% since 2009, to $600 per vial.

The following Republican House of Representatives have announced they will not seek reelection: Ken Buck, Mike Gallagher, Blaine Luetkemeyer, Debbie Lesko, Kay Granger, Patrick McHenry, Victoria Spartz, Brad Wenstrup. If only they would retire effective today, Democrats could get to work.

Vaping theater groping, Representative Lauren Boebert’s primary election, is not until 6/25/2024. She has every intention of running, even moving to a new district that she thought was more likely to elect her. She is polling third.

Republican Representatives: Jim Jordan, Mo Brooks, Matt Gaetz, Andy Biggs, Louie Gohmert, Scott Perry, Marjorie Taylor Green, Scott Perry, and Andy Biggs all played a part in the events that led up to 1/6. They broke their oath to the constitution by participating in an insurrection, and will ultimately be removed.

And finally, take off your shoes and socks. Let’s crunch some numbers. Super Tuesday was a yawn fest. The results were predetermined. Trump’s astounding wins conflict with the 96% approval rating he claims in the Republican Party, and he says MAGA is now 100% of the GOP. It is curious that in each state, 25-40% of every primary vote was against him. He must be doing old math.

Idaho is an excellent example of misleading numbers. The “Idaho Capital Sun” reported that 93% of Idaho’s registered Republicans did not vote in the GOP presidential caucus.

Trump won 84% … of the 7% who voted. That is nothing to brag about, but he did.

This striking pattern of Trump under-performing his poll numbers continues. According to 538, they expected Trump to win bigger:

  • Massachusetts by 37 (the outcome, 23)
  • Tennessee by 69 (57)
  • Texas by 64 (56)
  • Virginia by 49 (29)
  • Iowa by 53 points (30)
  • New Hampshire by 18 points (11)
  • South Carolina by 28 points (20)
  • Michigan by 62 points (42)

The exception:

  • North Carolina by 46 (he won by 51)

Republican voter turnout was low across the country. If Democrats show up on Election Day, although he will not shut up, he also won’t end our democracy and all that goes with it.

  1. Dammit. When is Leticia James going to demand he pony up the money in this fraud trial in NY? Why is he not being made to pay what is owed? So frustrating.
Did you see that Santos is going to run for office again in NY because he loves his country so much? Wonder what his resume will say this go-round.

    1. He has until March 25th to come up with that $400+ million, accruing interest every day he delays.
Oh Hell no! Santos will never ever ever get back together with the wives of Long Island… I hope.

  2. Well stated, great post. I have been living in Iowa for over 8 months, going on 9 months. I found out Iowa is a Republican state with many in congress on the state level as well as federal level that is supposed to be representing Iowa, are far right. We have a really strict governor who is trying to take away more of our rights due to Christian nationalists views she has. Many of the Republicans here are fellow Trumpsters. When I moved here and found out Iowa was mainly run by Republicans, I freaked out. How anyone could vote for Trump and his Republican followers, I have no idea. My only conclusion is, his followers are either gullable people who believe his every lie, or these are people who are just as bad as Trump is and are willing to put our freedoms at stake for their own personal agendas.

    1. Thank you! I hope you find some like-minded friends out there.
I don’t understand how people can vote against their best interests, either. Part of it started with targeted propaganda Russia planted in 2015 on Facebook. MAGA has become a cult.
Mark Twain said, “It’s easier to fool someone than to convince them they’ve been fooled.” And that’s true here.
But this goes back farther than that. I grew up in a blue state and always understood that the Democratic Party works for the people, while Republicans only work for the rich but are elected by rural angry white men who struggle financially. Hatred (misogyny and racism) fuels them, and they carry their unread bibles as props.
The Supreme Court has shown us who they are. They’ll help Trump in any way they can. We all need to vote. That’s our only hope at this point.

  3. Willing, trained, looking very presidential ~ Kamala Harris ~ per chance our leader! There’s no reason whatsoever to be fidgety about Biden’s age and trembling fragility, with her standing there at the State Of The Union get-together. Ready. One of the President’s better moves, I think, was making her his vice-president…

    1. Kamala has had my support since she made Rapey Judge Kavanaugh cry during his confirmation hearings.
She was the 32nd DA of California and knows the law. Despite her current position which is in the shadow of President Biden, she is gaining foreign policy experience that gives her an edge over most of her colleagues.
She is no simpering Mike Pence. I have a dusty rose colored- “, la” -t-shirt that I wear often. No one knows or asks me what it means.

I’m so tired of Trump. This phrase is not a classy one but it fits- he is a turd that won’t flush. He is a monster. I don’t think his supporters know half of what he plans to do if he finds a way to regain office.

      Anyway, happy Monday!
