Knees Deep

Yesterday and it’s mayhem
Took a toll, that’s nothing new
Still out of bed by six am
Else dogs nipping will ensue

I drag my corpse down the stairs
And open my back door
This old house it begs repair
But time I have no more

Dogs now in, lizard fed
Hanging flowers— already dead
Clock chains pulled, my teens abed
Knees deep in work— my day ahead

Slowly waning in a sink hole
What will happen when I’m gone?
Who will change the toilet roll
Do dishes, laundry, mow the lawn?

I do have hope for everyday
It gives me strength to persevere
I’ll accept tomorrow, come what may
Surprise me—to know the future I could not bear
