Lydiella

Once upon a time, there lived a sardonic single mum with a unibrow; her name was name Lydiella, and she worked very long hard hours. After work, Lydiella would go home to cook and clean and pay bills and lovingly take care of her three hormonally challenged teenaged children. She always kept food on the table, although the food was often declared “too healthy” by her constantly growing son. His habitual growth spurts forced Lydiella to painstakingly purchase new jeans for him, so it wouldn’t always look like he was wearing capris. Lydiella, who once had two beautifully arched eyebrows, until her two teenaged daughters “borrowed” her tweezers, and never returned them, was now very poorly groomed.

One day while working, a supervisor approached Lydiella and asked her if she was working the following morning. Lydiella, who worked every day sadly responded “yes”. The supervisor said: “There is a winter storm advisory. You don’t want to drive in that.” Lydiella had a glimmer of hope at the kindness she thought was about to be bestowed upon her with… perhaps a day off. The supervisor continued: “If I were you, I’d go home after work today, do what you need to do, then come back and sleep here tonight- that way you won’t have to worry about being late.” When the supervisor waked away, Lydiella pulled out her smart phone and checked the weather app.

There was indeed snow in the forecast, expected to start at 10 pm and continue through 4 pm the next day. Lydiaella was terrified of driving in snow, but she had her teenaged children at home to care for. She went home that evening and thought about what the supervisor had said. She decided to stay home, and after several loads of laundry, set her alarm an hour early so she would have time to shovel her car out of her perpetual driveway, and take her chances with the drive to work.

All night she was plagued by dreams of a giant snow monster with icicle fingers picking up her car, and spinning it over its head. She dreamt of being cold and laying in a ditch, with no battery life on her smart phone. She tossed and turned all night, and before morning had broken, she was roused from her sleep by her alarm which was playing Cat Stevens “Morning Has Broken”.

She shot up like a bolt and ran to the window to discover that the evil supervisor and the lying weather app on her smart phone were…
WRONG!! It was like Christmas morning- but not a white Christmas. There wasn’t a flake to be seen. Lydiella did a happy dance, and she and her unibrow lived sardonically ever after.

    1. Yes, hot wax, threading, electrolysis… her birthday is in April. Poor Lydiella’s missing tweezers were a vintage pair from the 80’s, no longer manufactured, and as such rendered irreplacable. Sparrows might fly into the girls rooms and retreive them someday…
