“Young people are capable, when aroused, of bringing down the towers of oppression and raising the banners of freedom.” ~Nelson Mendala
If you’ve already voted, scroll to the end. The tweets attached are your reward.
I deleted most of this post on edit because with everything that’s happened in the past year, if you’re not “aroused” to vote, my words will not make a difference. Women whose healthcare decisions are now in the hands of gray-haired politicians have more than sufficient motivation to exercise their civic duty. The raging climate affects us all; will that make a difference in voter turnout? Social Security and Medicare are next on the GOP list; is that enough to bring the older population to the polls? Do we want to live in a country where gun violence no longer shocks us? LGBTQ and communities of color are not exempt from the Republican Party agenda. Will you vote?

I’m worried that the reality we face, if this election doesn’t tip congress to the left, hasn’t gotten the attention it needs.

There are 20 days left to exercise a right that some would like to end. November 8, 2022, is Election Day. Vote early to bypass surprises like closed polling stations or purged registrations. Vote by mail to avoid lines.
Or confirm the status of your registration on the USA.GOV website, and if all is copacetic, vote on Election Day.
Great news: Georgia’s early voting opened this week and a record was set on day one. Over 130,000 ballots were cast, according to the Secretary of State’s office. The previous record for the 1st day of early voting in a midterm, was set in 2018 with 70,849 votes cast. Those 60,000 votes could be more than the margin of victory in this election.

At the risk of sounding dramatic, this could be our last election. Republicans can’t win if people vote in large numbers. They are the minority. Some states have given their local authorities the right to alter results.

This election will define us as a nation. We have this opportunity to elect a real democratic majority in Congress and take Senators Sinima and Manchin out of the news cycle. They get attention for selling us out on every front.

Republicans want to protect their 2017 tax cut for the wealthiest Americans and the free ride corporations enjoy will play through.

With a real majority in the Senate we can expand the U.S. Supreme Court court, based on precedent: the number of Supreme Court Justices was set in 1870 to align with judicial circuits. At that time there were nine judicial circuits. That number is now thirteen.
You made it!!

A California story: I placed my ballot in our outgoing mailbox on Saturday morning. Saturday evening I received both an email and a phone call telling me that my ballot had been picked up by the USPS and would be delivered soon. On Monday, an email saying that my ballot has been received and counted. That’s how vote-by-mail should work nationwide!

Yes, it is. I mailed my Illinois ballot last week and I haven’t had any kind of confirmation. I like my Governor Pritzker, but have a little crush on Gavin Newsom.

Newsom has made a few small mistakes, but mostly he’s doing a pretty good job for us. Our biggest issue right now is the cost of gasoline, but he’s even doing what he can to mitigate that! He’s a good guy!
