Ten Musts to Retain a Friend

Be nice
Pleasant agreeable
Kind and amiable
You can determine your frame of mind
Nasty disdaining
Surly complaining
Such a friendship I’d have to decline

Listen
You’ve filled me in
Again and again
On all your trials and tribulations
If you paused for air
I might think you care
To converse- that’s not the situation

Don’t judge
While I value
Talks with you
Ours is not to judge one another
If you don’t care
For pea green hair
Be glad you’re not the mother

Forgive failures
I had a bad day
And neglected to stay
At the party until you arrived
That was my bad
I know it’s sad
Of my company to be deprived

Return items you borrow
A loan is a loan
If I had known
You would never return my effects
I wouldn’t have leant
Things that I meant
To return to someone else with respect

Don’t discuss contentious issues
I don’t care to discuss
What you consider unjust
About the way I always vote
We both have the right
So stop with the fight
Odds of changing my mind are remote

Don’t be needy and demanding
I sometimes say no
I don’t want to go
I’m staying home with a book and a glass of wine
Solitude is good
Everyone should
Enjoy alone time- you’ll be fine

Offer advice only when solicited
I’m not your minion
If I want your opinion
I’ll say “Hey what do you think?”
Until then suppose
The subject is closed
Just be my friend not my shrink

Show up when you say you will
You said “Lets meet
At the diner down the street
For breakfast I’ll be there at 9”
I said “okay”
Then on that day
I waited well over an hour to dine

Laugh at all jokes
Laugh and snort
I’d like to report
Through the clouds I see sunshine
Lemonade from lemons
Why was six afraid of seven?
Well, because seven eight nine
