I have always been math intolerant, and really what is more insipid than math? I like words. Numbers hurt my head. While not terminal, this affliction is chronic. I have always exercised more of the creative right side of my brain than the atrophied analytical left. At least that’s what I’ve always told myself.
On further inspection however, this theory is flawed. I do use math everyday. I can calculate 15% for a tip, 8% sales tax, divide or multiply recipe ingredients, figure out how many new parents it takes to change a diaper, all without the aid of fingers and toes. I would be able to balance my checkbook if I had any money to balance. This revelation is in hindsight.
When each of my children progressed into 5th grade math, I had to step back . . . panic stricken.
I had conditioned myself to be afraid of math. Math was a cyclopean effort impossible to navigate. I had attempted to find the chewy caramel center of this crippling fear, but when I got too close to the edge, I was sucked into a vortex of symbols, numbers . . . Vertigo . . . The Birds . . . Psycho . . . and in The Rear Window . . . I see the answer in the reflection of the glass. . .
The answer is ***

Which subject in school did you find impossible to master? Did math give you hives? Did English make you scream? Do tell!

Hi there, Lydia.
I tuned out of math long ago in school, I carried a paint brush, a diary and a softball mitt – why did I need math? I’m a substitute teacher today and I often think back to that kid who tuned out early and I want to smack her in the head 😉

I still don’t enjoy math, but I’m much better at it 🙂
Nicely written post!
If I have three pencils, and you have four apples, how many pancakes will fit on the roof?
Answer: Purple, because aliens don’t wear hats.
I seen a picture that has that question on it, and it sums up EVERYTHING I feel about math. I have a 14 year old daughter that helps me with me college level math. :-p
