New Voting Requirements – Be Prepared

The process has started. Although the Senate has not yet voted on Trump’s “Save Acts” (which passed in the House along party lines), several states have already implemented its new voting regulations. A driver’s license alone, even if it is a REAL ID, no longer suffices to grant you your rights. Get ready now.

A passport will suffice; however, 50% of the eligible voters do not have a current one. There is time to acquire it if you start that process today. But if you wait, it may not reach you in time. According to the U.S. Department of State’s website, it takes four to six weeks to get a passport (add to that delivery time each way.) The cost of procuring a new one is $165 for adults; they price renewals at $130. You’ll need a photo that fits exacting specifications; that will bring the cost up $10 or $20. You can expedite the process for an additional $60, in which case it will still take two to three weeks to arrive (not including delivery time), and for even faster processing, add $22 more. The fully expedited process for a new passport would cost at least $257.”

Let’s be realistic; many of us have lost our disposable income to inflation. We may not prioritize the expense of a passport over food, rent, utilities, medical expenses, prescription drugs, and transportation. Republicans know this, and that’s why they want it this way. It excludes people with limited resources. That is why critics say requiring a passport is a “poll tax” whose purpose is to give only the affluent voting power.

If we all vote they don’t win.

Another option is to use your birth certificate as an ID. This is Project 2025 in action: “repeal the 19th amendment.” That requirement is aimed at disenfranchising women, 40% of whom changed their names in marriage. If the name on your birth certificate doesn’t match the name you are legally using, you can’t vote. It doesn’t matter whether you have a social security card or government ID with your new name. There are ways around that too. Take a copy of your wedding license. If you’re divorced, you need to bring that and your divorce decree with the section that says you have permission to keep your ex-husband’s name.

Okay, what about military ID cards? While they are listed as qualifying documents under the SAVE ACT, they will not suffice on their own. The bill says you also need to show a military “record of service,” one that shows your birthplace was in the U.S.

Republicans don’t want us to vote. Why? Repeat after me: if we all vote, they can’t win.

Start gathering your documents today. They are relying on you to be unprepared.

Check your voter registration to make sure it hasn’t been purged. Check often.
