Chasing Fumes

Inevitably the alarm sounds.

Inescapable is the commencement of daily toil.

Compulsory pre-departure ablutions performed.

Inexorably I listen as my son repeatedly hits snooze.

Unalterable is his routine of chasing fumes until the school bus stops.

A contradiction, this daily contretemps.

If he is on time for school, it is by the skin of his teeth.

I am foreordained to bear witness to this entropy for three more years.

Undeniably I will then be condemned to bemoan the lost days when he was at home.
