Let’s Have Lunch

Women in literature, just like women in real life, need a friend on occasion, someone to say “snap out of this funk you’re in, he is not worth it”.

I am stepping into the following novels as the voice of reason:

Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary:
Emma – finds herself trapped in a marriage that she abhors. She spends money she doesn’t have heedlessly (with the help of a loan shark) until she finds herself in impossible debt and desperately looking for a way out. No one will help her. She ultimately turns to her lover and realizes that he, the man she had put all her romantic hope in, had only been using her.
She then swallows a handful of arsenic and dies a painful death.

or does she . . .
Emma, listen to me. Let them repossess the stuff. It’s just stuff. We are consolidating your debt, and working on liking ourselves. No men until that happens. Let’s have lunch.

William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet:
Juliet Capulet – wakes after her fake poisoning to find that it lead to Romeo’s real poisoning.
She takes his dagger and stabs herself.

or does she . . .
Julie, he was cute, I get it. You are so young. Your dad feels bad about this and will not force the marriage to Paris. Shake it off, and let’s get something to eat.

Leo Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina:
Anna – becomes despondent having lost her children and social standing when she leaves her husband and that loveless marriage for her lover, who can’t fix it for her.
She throws herself under a train.

or does she . . .
Anna, you are a hot mess. You need to calm down. We’ll find a way for you to see your kids . . . over lunch.
(She might do it anyway, but I tried.)

Fictional Intruder
Go down the rabbit hole with Alice; play quidditch with Harry Potter; float down the river with Huck Finn… If you could choose three fictional events or adventures to experience yourself, what would they be?
