Trump and NATO

Donald Trump believes NATO members should pay the U.S. for continued support. NATO, the National Atlantic Treaty Organization, is a formal alliance between North America and Europe. From its inception after the end of WWII, its main purpose was for members to defend each other from the possibility of communist Soviet Union taking control of their nations.

All 28 NATO countries have committed to pay 2% of their GDP to the cause by 2024, and although not all have met the 2% goal, they do all pay.

U.S. participation in the NATO alliance is important because whether Trump wants to admit it or not, Russia is a growing threat to our security and, as Dwight D Eisenhower said, there is strength in unity.

Currently 800 British troops are rolling into Germany en-route to the Estonia/Russia border in order to deter any hostile Russian activity. This deployment is the largest military defense by the UK against Moscow since the Cold War. 1100 troops including French and Danish, with the support of German and Canadian soldiers, also seek to ensure there is not a repeat of Russia’s annexation of Crimea or the take over of parts of East Ukraine Estonia.

Back on January 12, 2017, the U.S. sent troops to protect Poland’s borders from Russia, under the Obama administration. That was the largest U.S. military deployment to Europe in decades. Whether Trump will keep them there remains to be seen.

In total, there will be more than 4,000 international troops trying to fend off Russia’s aggression toward bordering countries.

Putin’s spokesman Demitry Pescov said in response to recent military precautions: “These actions threaten our interests, our security, Especially as it concerns a third party building up its military presence near our borders. It’s not even a European state.”

Meanwhile Donald Trump is playing around with the idea of charging NATO a membership fee.

Trump has said NATO is obsolete. NATO is in fact a peacekeeper whose function as of late has been crisis management. It is in the interest of world peace to deter Russian hostility, but Trump’s allegiance is questionable. Is he is unaware of the threat Russia poses to its bordering countries, or is he is in bed with Vladimir Putin?

  1. Or does he in fact know either way? Does he really know where he stands on anything? Does he HAVE a genuine stand on anything, or is he automatically saying ‘Black is white’ because the thrill of all that lovely, lovely power has gone straight to the hole in his head where his brain should be?
It would be funny – the top bloke in world’s most powerful nation ruling by knee-jerk tweet – if it wasn’t so serious.

    1. He is a perfect storm-no impulse control, probably sold his soul to Putin, and he’s a narcissist. I think you’re right; he says black is white because he needs the attention it gives him . I just hope we survive his term.
