Listen —
Pop, crackle, fizz –
Someone uncorking champagne
Flapping wings of white doves
Released in the rain
A single cannon blast
And confetti flies
Filling the street
Where the schoolbus will drive
And pull away from the curb
With my youngest in tow
A sophomore in high school
He’s not happy I know
My freedom returns
He is mourning his own
Head in hands he laments
The best summer he’s known
Back to four walls- a prison
Where clocks stand still
Of six hours the high point
A random fire drill
At home I hear screeching –
It cannot possibly be
School bus brakes
Freedom ending today…already?
