The Consequences of Allowing Trump Unfettered Power Have Begun

During Trump’s first days in office, he reminded us of his only job qualification. The Apprentice reality show taught him to say, “you’re fired” and that made the small man feel big. He fired 400 FAA senior officials, 3,000 air traffic controllers and the heads of the TSA and Coast Guard. He disbanded the Aviation Security Committee and froze TSA hiring.

Donald Trump fired the head of TSA on 01/20/2025. Nine days later, on 01/29/2025 the U.S. had its first commercial airline crash in 16 years.

New: Today, at least six senior FBI leaders have been ordered to retire, resign or be fired by Monday.

The idiot doesn’t replace the people he fires. He removes experienced officials and cuts established oversight mechanisms without concern for aviation safety or security. He only wants to dismantle his predecessor’s work.

(Like his plan for healthcare.)

Trump blames President Biden for last night’s plane crash, accusing him of lowering aviation standards with the diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) program. That is almost funny. The consequences of turning over power to Trump are just beginning. 2017 was damaging, but this term will be more dangerous. This time, there is no one to restrain him.

In two weeks:

The U.S. has exited both the Paris Climate Agreement and the World Health Organization.

Immigration Enforcement is underway, and he is not only targeting illegal immigrants with criminal records, as he said he would. He is removing people who have been working here legally for decades and paying taxes. He has deployed additional troops to the U.S.-Mexico border. Trump’s ‘Border Czar’ has revoked protections, limiting migrant captures in locations like churches and schools. Under President Biden, 72% of ICE arrests were convicts. (Convicted felons, like Hair Trump.) Since Trump took over, it dropped to around 50%. He is arresting fewer criminals.

In the scientific community, Trump put a freeze on government scientific communication, causing disruptions in research activities, leaving scientists without answers about the future of public health initiatives.

Trump has offered buyouts to almost all the 3-million people employed by the US government if they leave their jobs by February 6. This is part of his attempt to gut the civil service. (Demand cash before agreeing to anything. He does not pay.) And you may have read about the mandate he issued requiring all federal employees to return to in-person work by February 6 or resign, with a buyout option available.

The consequences of his ineptitude have begun.

  1. I might note that he cannot pay the promised buy out for federal workers. There isn’t money in the lack of a budget for it, and congress can’t even keep the lights on. Federal workers should probably be polishing up their resumes and looking for something better than the roller coaster they are on, but not because of his offer.
