Senate Fails to Pass Budget

The Senate vote resulted in a 48-50 vote, rejection of the government funding measure. Republicans say they don’t want to raise the debt ceiling. They have no shame for their hypocrisy.

The failure of the budget passing will result in a government shut down on Thursday at 11:59 pm. If Senate Majority Leader Schumer abolishes the filibuster and holds another vote with all members present, and Democrats remain unified, the budget will pass. That’s a lot of ifs.

Democrats and Republicans split the Senate 50/50, so which two did not vote? Shockingly it was not a Sinema/Manchin hit job. The two no-shows were Senator Dianne Feinstein (D/CA) and Senator Ben Sasse (R/NE). Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer voted nay.

Reuters: “Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer voted “no” to allow him to call another vote.”

Because the filibuster requires 60 votes to pass, this bill has no chance. If Schumer manages to nuke the filibuster and gets Ms. Feinstein to vote and gets Ms. Sinema and Mr. Manchin to vote yes again, we’re good. However, I believe Sinema and Manchin voted for the bill only because she knew there were not enough votes either way.

Manchin has been a firm no on eliminating the filibuster perhaps because then he’d have to show his cards.

The truth is that Mitch McConnell, the Republican Senate minority leader, is trying to make President Biden look bad; he’s willing to risk the economy to do so.
