Work is a beast- a rhinoceros that instinctively stomps out fire, a fire that was originally sparked by a passion, but is now barely visible through the cloud of smoke.
The problem with being a provider, the one who works for a living, is that the amount of time one is required to work in order to provide for others casts a shadow over everything else. Can you earn a living and have time left to participate in the living?
My obsession these past two decades has been providing for my children, beyond survival necessities such as food, shelter, and clothing—equally important has been the intangible requisite for a fulfilling life, a passion. Providing a stick of motivation for each child that they can rub against everything in their path until, with any luck, something creates a spark and ignites, leaving them only to breath life into the flame.
The ultimate would be a living made through that obsession. That would keep the rhinoceros away from their fire.
If only we could find a way to keep poachers away from the rhinoceros.
