I love Shel Silverstein’s work, and have many fond memories of reading and re-reading: “A Light In The Attic”, “Where The Sidewalk Ends”, “The Missing Piece”, and all the others to my children.
When my daughter was in second grade, she had to memorize a poem to recite in class. This poem she chose is like a song that I can’t get out of my head:
SNOWBALL
by Shel Silverstein
I made myself a snowball
As perfect as could be.
I thought I’d keep it as a pet
And let it sleep with me.
I made it some pajamas
And a pillow for its head.
Then last night it ran away,
But first it wet the bed.

DAILY PROMPT
By Heart
You’re asked to recite a poem (or song lyrics) from memory — what’s the first one that comes to mind? Does it have a special meaning, or is there another reason it has stayed, intact, in your mind?

So glad you didn’t chose ‘the giving tree’… I would have run out of tissues at work.

Yay! My kids loved Shel Silverstein, also. We still have all his books. Love this poem!

Another Silverstein fan. 🙂 I often get “Sick” stuck in my head… still… years after school no longer applies. 🙂
