Let’s call this a food hangover…because that’s what it is. One look at my tiny dog who lies on her back, pink belly stretched alarmingly tight says it all. Yesterday this was a house full of an extended family of food smugglers. They all must have been transporting food directly into the mouth of what should be a 6.5 lbs dog. She and I feel the same today…but I did this to myself.
This annual tryptophan lethargy has still not passed…that chemical in turkey that makes us drop face first into our mashed potatoes, a day later I find a smattering of casualties: one lays on the floor, one on the sofa, and one still face down in the mashed potatoes. I should probably check for a pulse… I don’t even remember if anyone had the energy to whip the cream for the pumpkin pie. Did we just drink it out of the carton?
I shouldn’t feel like this, not having eaten any of the turkey, but I understand tryptophan is in bananas as well. I can’t blame bananas either. I blame my children…not because I ate my young, but because they are one source of my current vegetative state. The logistics of getting two home from schools on different sides of the continent, hosting festivities, then consuming too much food, and the wine seemed like a good idea at the time—all has left me feeling odd today.
My only goal is to continue digesting yesterday’s meal, as my 7 lbs dog does likewise on my lap.
Meanwhile, I’m thinking about the turkey President Obama pardoned this week. It seems a bittersweet act of kindness.
What is “Tot” the turkey doing right now? Where did he go after the ceremony? Will he have trouble adjusting to a life of freedom like any other prisoner released after a long period of incarceration, without the life skills necessary to survive in the world? I wish someone would follow up—check on him…so I might redirect my obsessive thoughts toward some other inconceivable world event…there are a few others right now.
