Donald Trump: America’s New Role Model

Parenting isn’t easy, it never has been. That said, we parents today have a few challenges previous generations didn’t have. One such challenge can be explained using the item at the top of my list of parenting goals. My priority has always been to teach my children ethics: the differnce between right and wrong, respecting people’s differences, having compassion, putting in an honest hard day’s work, owning your mistakes, remaining humble, do unto others…etc.

It helps to use examples when making a point: people who have achieved high status by following these basic principals of ethics. Unfortunately, any examples of successful ethical people today have been overshadowed by one person who  demonstrates that ethics aren’t necessary to succeed. By my title, you should know of whom I speak.

The lesson we learn from our current “president” is that to succeed in 2017, we must apply a different set of rules.

1• Make up your achievements, and repeat the story at every turn, even when the subject doesn’t apply:

  • “I put it out before the American people, got 306 Electoral College votes. I wasn’t supposed to get 222. They said there’s no way to get 222, 230’s impossible. 270 which you need, that was laughable. We got 306 because people came out and voted like they’ve never seen before so that’s the way it goes. I guess it was the biggest Electoral College win since Ronald Reagan.”  Donald Trump, 2/16/2017

2• And if called out on it, play dumb:

  • “I was given that information. I was given — I actually, I’ve seen that information around. But it was a very substantial victory.” Donald Trump, 2/16/2017

3• Take Credit for other peoples work:

  • Nov 18, 2016 President-elect Donald J. Trump claimed credit for persuading Ford to keep an automaking plant in Kentucky rather than moving it to Mexico. … Minutes later, Mr. Trump wrote in a second tweet: “I worked hard with Bill Ford to keep the Lincoln plant …
  • The New York Times › Dec 28, 2016 – Trump Takes Credit for Sprint Plan to Add 5,000 Jobs in U.S. Sprint said the jobs were part of an earlier commitment by the Japanese company, which owns a controlling stake in the wireless carrier.
  • ›Dec 1, 2016 – Trump travels to Indiana to  take credit for saving Carrier jobs.

4• Never say the word “lie”—ever. Instead say: truthful hyperbole, misstated facts, alternate facts, may have forgot to mention, it’s what I was told.

  • “People want to believe that something is the biggest and the greatest and the most spectacular. I call it truthful hyperbole. It’s an innocent form of exaggeration — and a very effective form of promotion.” Donald Trump, The Art of the Deal
  • “He didn’t tell the vice president of the United States the facts and then he didn’t remember.” ~Donald Trump on Flynn

5• Accuse others of that which you are guilty:

  • “And I’m telling you, November 8, we’d better be careful, because that election is going to be rigged,” the New York billionaire told Fox. “And I hope the Republicans are watching closely or it’s going to be taken away from us.” ~ Donald Trump, October 2016

6• It doesn’t matter what others think of you. What matters is what you tell others to think of you.

  • “I’m here today to update the American people on the incredible progress that has been made in the last four weeks since my inauguration. We have made incredible progress. I don’t think there’s ever been a president elected who in this short period of time has done what we’ve done.” ~ Donald Trump 2/16/2017

7• Treason is okay, but those who discover it, and report it are bigly bad:

  • “The real scandal here is that classified information is illegally given out by “intelligence” like candy. Very un-American!” ~ Donald Trump
  • “The FAKE NEWS media (failing@NYTimes@CNN@NBC, and many more) is not my enemy, it is the enemy of the American people. SICK!”

8• Surround yourself with people who will agree with everything you say:

  • “Donald Trump has just always elevated women to the highest level.” ~Kellyanne Conway
  • “This was the largest audience to ever witness an inauguration, period, both in person and around the globe” ~Sean Spicer
  • Trump’s Chief Strategist Steve Bannon who’s signature quotes include:“Birth control makes women unattractive and crazy,” “Would you rather your child had feminism or cancer?” and “Gay rights have made us dumber, it’s time to get back in the closet.” Has praised Trump, saying: “He gets it; he gets it intuitively”

9• When confronted with your misogynistic, white-supremacist tendencies: use alternative facts.

  • “Nobody has more respect for women than Donald Trump!” (third person is a nice touch) ~ Donald Trump
  • “It was locker room talk.” ~Donald Trump
  • “I didn’t know he was disabled.” ~Donald Trump (The reporter, Mr. Kovaleski, said that he had met with Mr. Trump repeatedly: “Donald and I were on a first-name basis for years,”)
  • “I am the least anti- Semitic person that you’ve ever seen in your entire life.” ~Donald Trump
  • “the least racist person” Donald Trump

10• Only stupid people pay taxes:

  • “That makes me smart.”~ DonaldTrump

The parenting lesson in this is that ethics and success do not always translate. We have to be the role models our children need.

  1. It would be a challenge to raise children to be ethical with this guy as President. (All my kids are grown now.) I think you could write a whole post on any of these 10 items, but # 5 could fill volumes.

    1. Yes, #5 has been his modus operandi, t’s infuriating. My youngest is in high school, so hopefully his values were set before Trump took office, but it’s clear that he has succeeded in spite of every unethical thing he’s done.
