Electoral College – WHY?

I recently saw some interesting math with regards to the electoral college:

  • The population of California is 38,800,000
  • The population of Wyoming is 584,153
  • California gets 55 electoral votes
  • Wyoming gets 3 electoral votes.
  • That means it takes 705,444 Californians to equal 1 electoral vote,
  • And 194,717 Wyoming (ites? ans?) to equal 1 electoral vote.

This gives every vote from Wyoming a value of 362% more than a single vote from California. I don’t see how the people of California can feel anything but disenfranchised by this disparity.

Electoral votes are based on congressional representation in each state…I get it. Far be it for be to second guess James Madison and Alexander Hamilton. These numbers, however would be in opposition to the argument that electoral votes are distributed to each state based on population. That would appear to be a myth…like Big Foot…whom I believe resides and votes in Wyoming.

I understand you want Wyoming to have a voice in the election, but why in this altered universe does Wyatt from Wyoming deserve a louder political voice than Calvin from California by virtue of where they choose to park their trailer home? You can be sure Calvin pays a much higher state tax on that same home than Wyatt. And swing states…let’s not talk about Olga from Ohio and Felisha from Florida in this post-

Let’s take a look at the timelines of voters rights:

  • 1790 – Only white male adult property-owners have the right to vote.
  • 1870 – The 15th Amendment is passed. It gives former slaves the right to vote and protects the voting rights of adult male citizens of any race.
  • 1920 – The 19th Amendment guarantees women’s suffrage.
  • 1924 – Indian Citizenship Act grants all Native Americans the right to vote in federal elections.
  • 1971 – The 26th amendment sets the minimum voting age at 18.

What about geographical equality for the individual? What incentive does Calvin have to vote? Really his vote is smoke and mirrors. Until we abolish this arcane system I would suggest Calvin take the next election day off—or move to Wyoming.
One Person – One Vote – It’s too simple to be considered.
Well lets nip this dichotomy in the bud. You can’t have your cake and eat it too. Until the electoral college is abolished, we have to expect its intention to be followed through. It was intended to give the members of the electoral college the last word in the election… not even taking into account that Hillary Clinton’s irrelevant popular vote lead is currently over 1,400,000 that of Donald Trump. The members of the electoral college  decide who is going to be the next president—not Calvin or Wyatt or Olga or Felisha. It is the members of the electoral college.

Alexander Hamilton in “The Federalist Papers,” said the Constitution is designed to ensure “that the office of President will never fall to the lot of any man who is not in an eminent degree endowed with the requisite qualifications.” The point of the Electoral College is to preserve “the sense of the people,” while at the same time ensuring that a president is chosen “by men most capable of analyzing the qualities adapted to the station, and acting under circumstances favorable to deliberation, and to a judicious combination of all the reasons and inducements which were proper to govern their choice.”

Attached is a link to the petition asking the members of the electoral college to exercise their constitutional right to vote as they see fit when they convene on December 19, 2016.
