“That Makes Me Smart”

“I have been under audit for almost fifteen years. I know a lot of wealthy people that have never been audited. I said do you get audited? I get audited almost every year.” ~ Donald Trump

Maybe that’s because other people pay taxes.

I have often complained about my personal experience as an employee who works for a major corporation that used this country’s flawed bankruptcy laws as a business strategy. The company I work for had billions of dollars in assets at the time it filed. That a viable company can manipulate bankruptcy laws that were clearly not intended for that purpose was eye opening for me. Why would they do it? Filing allowed the corporation I work for to bust union contracts, cut salaries 30%, decimate retiree benefits, renege on promises of fully funded pensions, it allowed them to break contracts with vendors, and they reaped a multitude of tax breaks in filing.

While all this was underway, upper management rewarded themselves for a job well done with hundreds of millions of dollars in bonuses for themselves… “the man”. Yes, they took money from retirees, and those employees who actually work day in and day out, and pocketed it. The middle class always takes the hit with corporate greed.
I remember a time when bankruptcy was a shameful maneuver used only when a person hit rock bottom.

Not only has the Donald filed bankruptcy protection, he has done it six, yes six times.

  • Bankruptcy No. 1: Trump Taj Mahal 1991
  • Bankruptcy No. 2: Trump Plaza and Casino 1992
  • Bankruptcy No. 3: Trump Castle 1992
  • Bankruptcy No. 4: Plaza Hotel, 1992
  • Bankruptcy No. 5: Trump Hotels and Casinos Resorts, 2004
  • Bankruptcy No. 6: Trump Entertainment Resorts, 2009

Last night, during the first of three presidential debates, in response to Hillary Clinton’s accusation that Donald Trump pays zero federal taxes he countered with:

“That makes me smart.”

Mr. Trump might call this “smart” but I call it white collar crime, and tax evasion. He may avoid paying his taxes via loopholes in the law, but if nothing else, it is unethical. If I were as smart as Trump I wouldn’t brag about it. In fact, I would not be able to sleep at night.

Imagine a world where everyone were as smart as Donald Trump:

Women would be judged by the size of their implants.

No taxes would be paid ever.

We’d have nice airports purchased on credit… we could afford the nice airports because we’d file bankruptcy and never pay for the labor and materials used to build them. No one would be allowed to fly into said airports unless they were of the approved race and religion, and people would be forced to fly out if they didn’t fit Trumps standards.

No one would ever admit to any wrong doing.
How did Donald Trump get this far? That this isn’t over yet boggles my mind.

Considering the polls, it is likely that half of my followers will be offended by this post. I did not set out to offend, but I did set out to state my opinion.

  1. I know what you’re saying. I’ve already lost a few long-time email buddies due to the differences in political views. I however support Hillary.

    Thanks for posting this

  2. Honestly, I’ve been trying hard to keep my nose out of politics that don’t concern us North of the border but I have to admit, even though I try very hard not to judge I catch myself looking at Trump supporters and thinking, ‘but they looked so normal’

    1. I try to stay away from most controversial topics, but a switch just clicked on in my brain this week and I have to vent my disgust that he has gotten this far. Hopefully I’m done for a while now…or at least for the night.
