Spring Travel

In the wake of the terror attacks in Brussels, the State Department has issued a travel alert to Americans traveling to Europe. They’re not necessarily saying don’t travel, that would be a travel warning, they’re telling you to be alert, and to exercise caution, saying: “Terrorist groups continue to plan near-term attacks throughout Europe, targeting sporting events, tourist sites, restaurants, and transportation.” Citizens are asked to “be vigilant and report any suspicious activity to authorities.”

After watching several news programs I am convinced that these programs are using fear tactics to boost their ratings. Perhaps sun hats made out of chain-mail will be the next fashion craze. Only those with nerves of steel will dine at the outdoor garden cafe. This fear mongering will not cause me to alter my spring break plans, because as my children know, neither vacation or travel is budgeted into my pay-check to pay-check existence…but that’s another post.

Regardless, there is no need for me to travel to Europe this spring to get an adrenaline rush, because everywhere you turn you can find a cause for alarm. Mass shootings in churches, movie theatres, and businesses have become a common occurrence. In fact, there was an unsubstantiated threat today at my children’s high school. The day passed without incident.

In this world of random chaos it would be easy to withdraw into the safety of your own four walls, but what kind of a life is that? If you give into fear once, it’s easier to give into it again and then the terrorists win. Do what scares you, and conquer your fears. This is the only life you get and it goes fast. Live your life…and don’t cancel your travel plans.
