Right Sided

Teacher, dentist, guard at the zoo
It’s a long list— what I wouldn’t want to do
Work in an office to answer phone calls
And please no restaurant work at all

Clearly I’ve always known what I won’t be
It’s what I would do that’s elusive to me
I prefer to use the right side of my brain
From math and science, I try to refrain

Let me paint a picture or write a play
The problem with that is its hard to get paid
To dance in a field with the wind in my hair
Or act out “Three Sisters” with somber despair

The work that I do these days is fine for now
It pays a few bills and allows time somehow
To exercise my lopsided brain
Life could always be worse— so I won’t complain

  1. For what it’s worth, tech writing was a compromise … but it made me a good living for a long time. If it wasn’t the perfect job, it was not a bad job. Nice people, and enough creativity to keep me from shriveling up. Paid decently, too.
