“What do you think you are, for Chrissake, crazy or somethin’? Well you’re not! You’re not! You’re no crazier than the average asshole out walkin’ around on the streets and that’s it. ” ~ One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest

As it happens, I, even with my significant hearing loss, have a keen ability to listen in on private conversations in public areas. The most recent conversation overheard, of which I find worthy of sharing was as follows:

A middle aged woman was discussing with others of the same demographic, a semi (not extreme) traumatic experience of which she had witnessed, although she was not directly involved in the incident. She conveyed some distress, and asked her peers: “I can’t stop thinking about it… do you think this could make me schizophrenic?”, at which point coffee came out of my nose.

Now, let me apprise you of my professional psychiatric credentials before I answer this question. I took psychology 101 as a correspondence course during the summer after my freshman year of high school. I received for these efforts an A- by mail, that is to say that it was delivered to me by the United States Postal Service, which is an independent agency of the United Stated federal government, so, I am highly qualified to offer the following as a 100% unequivocal fact.

Schizophrenia, while quite contagious- if you share DNA with other schizophrenics, is not randomly caused by stressful events, or by touching doorknobs, or by public toilet seats… even if there is someone who suffers from schizophrenia already sitting on the toilet seat, whom you didn’t notice before you sat down. As such, the answer is no. Although you may in fact be schizophrenic, stress is not the cause. You are welcome.

(I believe this is not the second time this prompt has come up, but at least the third, in the short time I’ve been blogging. It has me wondering if there is a paid position available with The Daily Post, that I could possibly apply for.)

  1. Well, thank heavens you have credentials or no one would believe you. I was sure you could catch it from a toilet seat — or at the least, they person already sitting on the toilet. I am so relieved to hear otherwise!
