Fiction: Three new beginnings
~~~~~~
The jet pierces magenta, lavender and cerulean blue, as I soar toward my new life, leaving behind only a contrail. This is a sunrise to put all others to shame. Six hours from now, I’ll be in sunny California, and then off to China to put my degree to the test.
His eyes are a bright shade of cerulean blue, and veiled with long thick black lashes that any woman would envy. I’ve never seen eyes like that. It’s been five years, and they’re as stunning as they were the first time I looked into them. He of course couldn’t tell you the color of mine. He tells me his coffee order, and I nod, as if I don’t remember that too, as he hands me his credit card. I sigh inwardly, and swipe his card. He says: “It’s nice to see a familiar face.” I just stare, mouth open, and he continues: “I’ve been gone for a few years, and it seems like this is a completely different town. Besides this coffee shop, none of this was here when I left.” I shake my head and try to get a hold of myself. I close my mouth, and touch my chin to make sure I’m not drooling. He’s talking to me! Respond you moron, say anything! “Yep, I’m still here… I mean the shop is.” That was smooth. No wonder I’m alone. Surprisingly, he smiles. Dimples… Kill me now, it’s too much. “So where have you been?” I finally ask.
My new black, old black, and fairly-recent black has been and always will be … black.
Orange is not black. Brown is not black.
But cerulean blue eyes, that’s something else. Just … not black.
