What’s To Eat?

“Jack Sprat could eat no fat.
His wife could eat no lean.
And so between them both, you see,
They licked the platter clean.”
Mother Goose~

For my oldest: no dairy,
sugar, grains or nuts to eat.
My middle child will eat no fowl and certainly no red meat.
To punish me, my youngest
eats red meat, “fast food’s the best”.
Me: wheat’s only a treat: pizza- no meat- the yummiest.

Their health to me is a concern
What’s left to cook, I can’t discern.
At a loss, I give up and claim defeat
Perhaps a salad of carrots, kale and beats

The food police- almost forgot
Have outlawed carrots too
Too much sugar so they say,
So don’t dare prepare a stew

As you can see there is not
A meal to make in just one pot
Brown rice, veggies, perhaps beans
Meat for the youngest remains unseen

They only tell me what they will not eat
As opposed to what they will
Easier to serve flesh and fava beans
to Hannibal… who to kill?

  1. You are very good at writing out what most parents think. I love your style. My kids are grown and gone but I remember it well. I have a sign now that says “The only reason I have a kitchen is because it came with the house.”
