“Never Is An Awfully Long Time”

I was a child who wished desperately (unlike Peter Pan), to be grown up. I wanted to be done with school, I wanted no more of being bossed around, and I wanted to be the master of my own destiny.

Be careful what you wish for. There are aspects of my wish (which did eventually come true) that were not as advertised.

To list a few:

• Typically, I don’t know anything-

“I’m not young enough to know everything.”
J.M. Barrie, Peter Pan

• There is no safety net, and as frightening as life can be, being afraid is unproductive, wasted energy-

“The moment you doubt whether you can fly, you cease forever to be able to do it.”
J.M. Barrie, Peter Pan

• I have to make all the decisions, even the hard ones; and some of the decisions I make are the wrong ones.-

“We are all failures- at least the best of us are.”
J.M. Barrie, Peter Pan

• I can change anything in my life if I try hard enough.-

“Dreams do come true, if only we wish hard enough. You can have anything in life if you will sacrifice everything else for it.”
J.M. Barrie, Peter Pan

• Once a mom, always a mom.-

“The door’, replied Maimie, ‘will always, always be open, and mother will always be waiting at it for me.”
J.M. Barrie, Peter Pan

• Being nice is easier than being mean.-

“Shall we make a new rule of life from tonight: always try to be a little kinder than is necessary.”
J.M. Barrie, Peter Pan

• There is never enough money, so you have to stop wanting things you don’t need, and try to like your job.-

“Nothing is really work unless you would rather be doing something else.”
J.M. Barrie, Peter Pan

• I age; this was a complete shock.-

“All children, except one, grow up.”
J.M. Barrie, Peter Pan

• I can eat cake for breakfast if I want to.-

“All the world is made of faith, and trust, and pixie dust.”
J.M. Barrie, Peter Pan

• Most things in life are hilarious, if you let them be.-

“Oh, the cleverness of me!”
J.M. Barrie, Peter Pan

• I said I’d never be like my parents.-

“Never is an awfully long time.”
J.M. Barrie, Peter Pan
