Fictional Feast

Let’s put Austen between Byron and Percy Shelly. We’ll intersperse the Bronte sisters: Ann, Charlotte, and Emily with: Voltaire, Keats, Fielding, Dickens… no.

More contemporary authors mayhap: Hemingway, Mitchell, Irving, Gabaldon, Follett… meh

Perhaps the macabre might be more interesting. Gothic romantic novelist Ann Radcliffe and Bram Stoker. I’ll throw in Mary Shelly, Ann Rice, and the Bronte sisters would fit in nicely here as well… no.

The problem is that I really wouldn’t know what to say to most of these people, and I must have my share in the conversation.

I’d rather have the characters they created to dinner. Let’s start with Rhett Butler (Scarlett can stay home), of course Fitzwilliam Darcy (sorry Miss Elizabeth), Jamie Fraser (Claire is back to the future) Now let’s add some antagonists and invite Heathcliff (next time perhaps Cathy), Victor Frankenstein … and what the hell, his monster can come. We need Count Dracula (no Mina), he can turn us all into vampires during the course of the evening. That will be much more diverting than charades or whist.

This is the final draft of my guest list. Now to create a Facebook event and send the notices out to those on my list. You may have noticed that I am the only woman at this party – my party. I’d post some pictures, but I don’t think vampires photograph.

Seat Guru
You get to plan a dinner party for 4-8 of your favorite writers/artists/musicians/other notable figures, whether dead or alive. Who do you seat next to whom in order to inspire the most fun evening?

  1. Interesting guest list… I did notice you were the only woman… and these characters didn’t care much for women so it might make for an interesting evening. That and trying to keep Frankenstein’s monster from killing his creator, as he was wont to do.

    1. Good point. I’ll make sure to seat the monster between the Count and Heathcliff. Herr Doktor will be safe. The real problem is that I have to choose my own seat mates between Darcy, Rhett and Jamie.

      1. Invite some of your own (non notable) friends along as wingmen. Then y’all can switch it up as the evening progresses.
